In a similar problem we've had in the past it was due to an dns error where the files were trying to open an old template from a non-existant server. I can't remember how we tracked it down, but if you've recently removed a server maybe this is the cause?
A dns entry to point to a valid ip address should be enough to show if it is the case. Having said all that, i couldn't explain it for the morning only. Perhaps in the afternoon they are opening unaffected files. If the same files always have the problem test them at various times of the day, including one or two attempts out of hours if possible. Have you tried pulling up Task Manager to see what is going on when they are trying to open the MS Office files? Also have you checked Event Viewer to see if there were any warning or errors connected with this issue? Is there a simila r fix for that version.
I'm not sure on that one. I suppose you could go and look how the "Open" command described above is formatted and if it is the same as above you could try it. If it does nothing for you it could alway be changed back. Just copy and past the line before you change it to Word or Notepad so you can always put it back exactly as it was.
The only problem is that if you do Windows Updates it will sometimes reset everthing and you will have to go in and do it again.
