You don't absorb a landscape in a day And then, all of a sudden I had the revelation of the enchantment of my pond. I took up my palette. Since then I've had no other motif. France is the country of my paternal ancestors and a special bucket-list vacation destination for our Compere family. The elegantly preserved Monet estate is owned, maintained and operated by the national Monet Foundation.
It consists of the 19th century Monet home, studio, gardens, ponds, landscapes, museum, gallery and gift shop. Monet created a magnificent 5-acre garden at his home with an incredible succession of colors featured in many of his paintings.
Once he was happy with his flower garden, he started casting his eyes across the road where there was a marsh with a small pond used by local farmers to water cattle. It seemed like a perfect place to plot his dream of having the Oriental floating garden.
First, the land was separated from the domain by a railroad and a major street. Second, the locals objected to his plan with such a fervour that, bonded with the authority, delayed the process of acquisition as much as possible. He bought part of the coveted land in February But he had to deal with a lengthy chain of bureaucracy just to convince the locals his exotic plants will not intoxicate the water supply.
There is nothing but trouble ahead, believe me, I give it up completely. I want to hear no more about it, I want to paint. Shit on the natives of Giverny, and the engineers. After he completed the development, he devoted his last thirty-or-so years of his life creating almost panels depicting the serene surface of his water-lily pond. He also developed an idea of creating a space with giant panels covering the walls, where one can submerge into the tranquillity of his garden.
Today, thanks to Google Art Project , we can virtually visit the rooms at the museum. The interactive tool allows you to freely walk in between the spaces, zoom into the panels and take your time exploring the murals.

Necessary Necessary. Were it not for the arrival of the renowned Impressionist painter Claude Monet in , the village might have remained a quiet provincial backwater. The long years Monet spent at his house in Giverny would turn it into a place of artistic pilgrimage, even in his lifetime. Monet designed several exuberantly colourful gardens, the most ambitious of which was his famous water garden complete with lily ponds , which initially caused discontent among some local people, as it involved shifting the course of a stream.
Monet was not seeking specific inspiration with this plan, but once the ponds were flourishing, they led to some of his very finest paintings — Water Lilies — a series that became beloved around the world and which put the small Normandy village of Giverny on the map.
Monet lived here up until his death in Thanks to generous donations, especially from wealthy American patron Walter Annenberg, the house and gardens were eventually beautifully restored , and have since become a magnet for huge numbers of tourists. The picturesque village of Giverny still draws artists, art lovers and tourists alike, as you can see from its many galleries, teashops, hotels and restaurants.
